Danoff originally wrote it using Johnny Cash's songs with a focus on Johnny Cash, however Denver realized from the first time he heard early versions that the song would be a big popular. Danoff recorded the song just a few days following having performed in Washington D.C. before an large crowd who were very appreciative.
